A Modern, Welfare‑Focused Qualification Written by Veterinary Professionals

VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Award in Preventative Canine Dental Care and Oral Hygiene

The VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Award in Preventative Canine Dental Care and Oral Hygiene is the most comprehensive, welfare‑centred dental care qualification available to pet professionals. Developed collaboratively by experienced dog groomers and registered veterinary nurses, it fills a long‑standing gap in the industry by providing the knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver safe, ethical, preventative oral care.

This qualification goes far beyond the limited training currently available elsewhere. It is grounded in veterinary‑approved principles, modern welfare standards, and real‑world grooming practice, giving learners the confidence to assess oral health accurately and provide preventative care that genuinely improves dogs’ quality of life.

Why This Qualification Matters

Hidden dental pain is one of the most common and least recognised welfare issues in dogs. Many pets live with discomfort for years because the signs are subtle and easily missed. Groomers are uniquely placed to spot early indicators, yet historically have not been given the training needed to do so safely.

This qualification empowers pet professionals to:

  • Identify early signs of oral disease

  • Understand when a dog is not suitable for ultrasonic cleaning

  • Make confident, appropriate veterinary referrals

  • Provide safe, preventative care that supports long‑term oral health

  • Communicate effectively with clients about dental welfare

What you will study

Learners complete four specialist units:

  • Application of Preventative Canine Dental Care and Oral Hygiene

  • Professional Practice

  • Canine Oral Anatomy and Physiology

  • Canine Oral Health

You will complete 24 hours of online study and one face‑to‑face training session at your chosen classroom.

Your Qualification

Learners receive indefinite access to our online learning platform, downloadable learner resource books and two free gifts worth over £40. Face‑to‑face training is available at both our sites:

  • 81 Worksop Rd, Woodsetts, S81 8RW

  • 41 Church Rd, Gatley, SK8 4NG

This award is ideal for pet professionals who:

  • Already offer or wish to offer a teeth‑cleaning service

  • Want to ensure their practice is ethical, safe, and welfare‑focused

  • Want to feel confident assessing oral health and making referrals

  • Hold a Level 2 animal care qualification and are aged 16 or over

After completing this qualification, learners feel equipped, knowledgeable, and empowered to deliver preventative dental care that genuinely benefits the dogs in their care.

By understanding the signs of hidden dental pain and knowing when to refer, groomers can dramatically improve a dog’s comfort and behaviour. Many dogs show calmer, happier grooming sessions after receiving appropriate dental treatment. This qualification helps groomers become advocates for canine welfare, strengthening trust with clients and elevating professional standards across the industry.
